It’s hard to turn on the television without thinking the world is on fire. Israel, a longstanding ally of the United States, has been facing relentless attacks from Hamas, and the Israeli people have been living in constant fear and uncertainty as rockets rain on their cities and homes. Similarly, Ukraine has been struggling against the aggression of Russia, which illegally annexed Crimea and continues to support separatist movements in eastern Ukraine.

Sadly, the indifference of some toward our allies’ suffering is a moral failure and a strategic mistake. By standing idly by while Israel and Ukraine face existential threats, we are sending a dangerous message to the world — that our commitments to our allies are not to be taken seriously.

This weakens our credibility on the world stage and undermines the security of all nations who rely on American support.

Born out of Israel defending itself, a new type of war is raging on college campuses nationwide. A propaganda war aimed at dividing us, it’s being waged on smartphones and social media. All the while, our enemies are not only watching in delight but are fueling the chaos.

It is concerning to see individuals supporting and sympathizing with organizations that engage in such horrific acts of violence and oppression.

As concerning are the vile comments made by some faculty members on these campuses that are not only disrespectful and offensive to the U.S. flag and the values it represents, but they also show a complete lack of understanding the reality of the situation in the Middle East.

The flag is a symbol of freedom, democracy and justice. To equate it to a Nazi flag —  a symbol of hatred, genocide  and oppression — is not only ignorant but also deeply offensive to those who have fought and died to protect those values.

Furthermore, calling for an “intifada” and denouncing the flag as a “dirty rag” only serves to incite violence and hatred. It is irresponsible to use such inflammatory language and to encourage such destructive behavior. Educators are responsible for promoting peace, understanding and dialogue, not inciting violence and division.

People need to be informed about the realities of these extremist groups and the consequences of their actions. The violence, intolerance and destruction they bring to communities are undeniable, and it is crucial to stand against such forces.

Students and faculty members need to educate themselves on the complex issues surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict rather than unthinkingly following the rhetoric of extremist groups. It is crucial to have open and respectful discussions about these issues, to listen to different perspectives, and to work toward peaceful solutions.

Instead of calling for violence and denouncing symbols of freedom and democracy, let us work toward building bridges, fostering understanding and promoting peace. Let us stand together against terrorism, tyranny and hatred and work toward a better future for all people, regardless of their nationality, religion or ethnicity.

Remember the sacrifices made by those who have fought for freedom and justice under the American flag. We honor their memory by standing up for those values peacefully and respectfully.
