In the months since assuming the office of U.S. attorney general, Pam Bondi has made it clear that she is not our chief lawyer but serves the whims of President Trump and the MAGA world.
This has been true throughout her reign, from her support of the mass pardons of January 6, which took place just before she took office, to her role in militarizing U.S. law enforcement in American cities, including the District of Columbia.
Far too often, Bondi’s application of her position, which is supposed to be serving the American people, has not followed the law and been nakedly in favor of Trump’s lawless agenda.
Under Bondi, various parts of the Justice Department have opened investigations and are seeking prosecutions for Trump’s and MAGA’s perceived enemies. Fueled mainly by Trump’s rage and dubious conspiracy theories, people like former President Barack Obama, former FBI Director James Comey, and former CIA Director John Brennan find themselves under the crosshairs of Bondi’s advocacy for Trump, not the American people. Former Trump national security adviser turned Trump critic just had his home raided by the FBI.
Add to the list New York Attorney General Letitia James and senators Chuck Schumer and Adam Schiff.
Bondi is even carrying water for Trump against those who dared to serve the people, such as former Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Director Chris Krebs and former national security official Miles Taylor. Both worked in the first Trump administration, and their “crime,” as Trump and Bondi see it, is that they told the truth and did their jobs.
Of course, as the U.S. attorney general, Bondi oversees the workforce at the Department of Justice. Her tenure has seen the firing, the pushing out and the resignations of many experienced lawyers and investigators. This has included virtually anyone associated with probes into and prosecutions of Trump’s lawlessness.
Worked with Special Counsel Jack Smith on Trump prosecutions? Demoted or sent packing. FBI leaders and agents who worked on investigations involving Trump? Demoted or sent packing. The Public Corruption Division got cleared out with demotions and the resulting resignations that followed lawless orders.
Numerous upper-level and rank-and-file Justice officials have left in the wake of the unprofessional behavior by Bondi. The result of these actions is not in the interest of justice, the enforcement of the law, or in the interest of the American people.
Bondi’s “Justice” Department has also dropped cases, often without explanation, against Trump and also friends and allies of Trump and MAGA. She’s overseen dropping cases against Boeing related to the 737MAX crashes, New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ corruption, Voting Rights Act violations, and numerous cases pertaining to environmental law.
The militarization of federal law enforcement to appease Trump’s authoritarian tendencies, most recently in the District of Columbia but with apparent aims at other Democrat-run cities, is a dangerous step that not only terrorizes people but also misdirects law enforcement resources from critical national security tasks.
Then there’s the Jeffrey Epstein case. Bondi spent much time before and after taking over the Justice Department talking about the Epstein case and related theories that the files contained information protecting influential people who may have been involved in sex trafficking. It has been reported that Bondi found out and then informed Trump that his name appears numerous times in the files. Then, weeks later, instead of releasing the files as repeatedly promised, Bondi released already public information and followed that up by declaring that the files did not contain anything new, and the work was finished.
We do not yet know what these files may have revealed about Trump or others, but it is hard not to imagine that this might have elements of cover-up action that Bondi took at Trump’s pleading.
Dropping key criminal cases, running out “disloyal” employees, opening clearly political probes, all to serve Trump and MAGA, defies Bondi’s oath and job function.
