Posts from acquaintances since the election show more than a few have deep reservations about another Donald Trump presidency. Trump’s successful sales pitch has many thinking those who voted for him threw the United States under the bus, soon to turn Bedford Falls, America, into Pottersville.
In the Frank Capra classic, the disappearance of one member of the community turns Bedford Falls into a hardened, bitter place of fear, darkness and desperation. It succumbs to the ambition and avarice of a cunning old man — Mr. Potter — who is friendly on the outside but carries deep wells of evil within.
Mr. Potter bought up most of Bedford Falls to become its landlord. Trump’s sales pitch has bought the allegiance and the vote of many of us. As Potter’s character played it cool on the outside, you must invert that personality to understand Trump. His evil is on his sleeve — racism, sexual abuse, theft, dishonesty. Within him though, there exists enough shadow and showbiz to have persuaded much of America to give him their votes.
It is connected with the weakness within us — the rationalized conscience where ends justify the means. Others hide their goodwill under the cover of simple-mindedness. Being thoughtful and ethical is hard work in a land where convenience and security trump self-reliance and dignity.
Pottersville is not much to look at without George Bailey. It is clear to many now that the America envisioned by Trump does not meet the requirements to be great again.
Great towers are built on strong foundations, not human frailty and vice. Those with allegiance to Trump seem to be building America on a moral house of cards. Like Potter, Trump’s power has the real potential to be practically unchecked. Out with the old, in with the new.
Many of us decided sacred honor does not put loaves of bread on the table. However, this house, without it, will not stand.
Enter George Bailey. He thought about killing himself, but instead jumped into the water to save his better angel — Clarence. One man in the community risks his life to save an elderly angel. In doing so, he finds out how important one individual can be to a community and saved himself, too.
Most of our nation’s future depends on how you act. Or don’t. We are at risk of drowning in a sea of distrust, media dependency and dishonor. I will do my best to guard the good in my life. Will you help me?
Don’t let darkness envelop our republic, which is a bit old, very vainglorious, definitely not great, but still lovable and in clear and present danger.
At the beginning of 2024, I had hopes for it being a good year. Now, 2025 approaches, and an old man with scattered, angry impulses, unchecked power and a silver tongue is expected to take office. Every one of us has a choice.
Do we help Trump build Pottersville? Or do we have the courage to face the old fart?
This land is still yours. Remember that. Fortune and better angels favor the brave. Happy Thanksgiving.
