It was the kind of news that might have gone largely unnoticed in less turbulent political times: an American technology firm released new data showing that its widely used AI model treats liberal and conservative positions even handedly. But the findings were especially consequential, coming as President Trump wages war on “woke AI” and places unprecedented scrutiny on an industry that shapes American politics and culture as much as some Washington institutions do.

Anthropic, the San Francisco firm that created the Claude chatbot, says its new research data represent the most substantial evidence yet that Claude Sonnet 4.5 treats competing political viewpoints with equal seriousness and analysis, without favoring either side. The report follows Trump’s recent executive order requiring federal agencies to root out partisan partiality in AI systems the government uses and to use only systems that are not influenced by “woke” ideology.

Anthropic’s timing in releasing the report is hard to ignore. The Trump administration has argued that bias poses a threat to the reliability of AI, while accusing developers of embedding ideological agendas in their systems. Critics counter that the administration’s crackdown may pressure companies to design their AI models to satisfy political expectations.

The Office of Management and Budget is expected to issue procurement guidance intended to implement President Trump’s as early as this week. The guidance is expected to outline how agencies should assess whether AI tools embed disallowed concepts such as diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Anthropic insists its neutrality work is neither new nor politically motivated. The company says it believes political even-handedness is fundamental to building AI systems that users trust. Its report introduces an automated evaluation that tested six leading AI models across more than 1,000 paired prompts spanning 150 contentious topics. Claude Sonnet 4.5 scored similarly to top competitors like Grok 4 and Google’s Gemini and ahead of others, including OpenAI’s GPT-5, on the company’s primary measure of neutrality.

Anthropic stressed that it is open-sourcing its evaluation method to encourage industry-wide standards. “We’re open-sourcing this new evaluation so that AI developers can reproduce our findings, run further tests, and work towards even better measures of political even-handedness,” Anthropic said in a recent blog announcing its findings.

The company acknowledged that political bias is challenging to define, model behavior can vary with configuration, and no single metric can fully capture fairness across the full range of political questions users pose.

The potential benefit of an AI platform that avoids left-leaning bias while Republicans control Washington is obvious. But even if Anthropic’s motivations include self-interest, the public benefit is obvious as well. Neutrality — real or perceived — is increasingly central to public trust in AI systems. If companies strengthen their guardrails to remain eligible for federal procurement, the result could be more transparent and balanced AI overall.

As the tech newsletter The Verge recently noted, “Though this order only applies to government agencies, the changes companies make in response will likely trickle down to widely released AI models, since refining models in a way that consistently and predictably aligns them in certain directions can be an expensive and time-consuming process.”

Anthropic’s openness about its limitations — including the difficulty of defining political bias and the fact that model outputs can vary from one interaction to another — suggests it is not simply offering the administration a political sales pitch. At the same time, its visibility as a major AI developer means it must navigate the reality that federal rules could determine which systems are permitted inside government agencies and which are effectively blacklisted.

The company’s move illustrates how rapidly the environment is changing. As federal procurement rules take shape and political rhetoric intensifies, AI developers may find themselves forced to justify not only how their systems work, but why they should be trusted in the first place.

In that sense, Anthropic’s neutrality push may be both an act of corporate self-preservation and a contribution to the public good.
